Hsinchu County has an abundance of human resources with over half a million citizens. The major ethnic groups are Hakka, Minnan, indigenous peoples and new immigrants. The indigenous peoples number 20,000 strong and hail mainly from the Atayal and Saisiyat tribes. Hakkas constitute over 73% of the population. The various ethnic groups have commingled well, creating a rich and diverse local culture.
