Hsinchu County Government Sets 5 Major Goals for Environmental Protection. Low-Carbon Communities Saves 550,000 kWh, or NTD$2.06 Million in 2014.
To promote Hsinchu County as a more eco-friendly city, the county government sets 5 major goals for environmental protection for the next 4 years: 1 international environmental education park, 10 green parks, 100 low-carbon communities, 1000 green areas, and 10000 places of self-maintenance. Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Group of the Environmental Protection Bureau has retrofitted facilities or licensed Low-Carbon Community Green Mark to 19 communities, saving about 550,000 kWh or NTD$2.06 million yearly. It plans to launch 20 more low-carbon communities. Two largest property management companies in Hsinchu County also encourage their managing apartment to retrofit buildings to become low-carbon. At weekly county meeting on January 6, Chiu Ching Chun, the Hsinchu County Magistrate, promised the citizens that the goals for environmental protections will be achieved in 4 years.

Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Group evaluates potential low-carbon communities and apartments in their electricity, lighting, air conditioning, public facilities, water resource management, recycling, and green architecture. It also provides assistance in retrofitting buildings into “green” facilities and obtaining Low-Carbon Community Green Mark. It plans to work on the seven aspects of carbon reduction: green eco-system, energy efficient architecture, energy saving facilities, resource recycling, low-carbon life, renewable energy, and low-carbon transportation.

Besides, Environmental Protection Bureau established a platform to promote low carbon and sustainable homeland in June 2013. Executive Chiu was appointed as the chairperson while the Deputy County Executive and Secretary General serve as vice chairpersons. By integrating the policies of energy conservation and carbon reduction in the County, Hsinchu County aims to achieve a silver certificate in low carbon and sustainable homeland assessment held by Environmental Protection Administration.
