To promote family activities during the winter vacation and keep track of the development of agritourism, Hsinchu County Magistrate Chiu Ching-chun along with Director of Agriculture Department Chiu Shih-chang visited KissGo Farm in Zhubei City and Gaoping Tomato Farm in Guanxi Township. Magistrate Chiu encourages people to get closer to the nature and experience the fun of fruit picking during the winter vacation and Chinese New Year holidays.
Ms. Fan, Chief Operator of KissGo Farm, was born in a peasant family. Her father, one of the winners of the 2009 Shennong Prize, grows strawberry in Miaoli. After learning all the farming techniques from her family, Ms. Fan and her husband started their own strawberry farm in Hsinchu County. On their 0.3 hectares of land, they cultivate three varieties of strawberries, each of which has unique aroma and texture. She believes as long as one is willing to work hard, everything can be achieved no matter what he /she does.
Gaoping Tomato Farm is famous not only for its tomatoes but also for its strawberries. Among all types of strawberries they grow, the Taoyuan No.4, introduced by Taoyuan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, is the most popular type, wowing visitors with its big size and sweet flavor. Farm Operator Ms. Xu Yi-jun emphasized that their farm adopts a natural and pesticide-free farming practice. They plant green garlic between strawberry individuals and use the smell to drive insects off. Flypapers can also be seen throughout the farm. These measures make sure that strawberries can grow in a secure and healthy manner.
Magistrate Chiu gave positive comments about the new thinking, modern agricultural practice and great opearation of the two farms. In recent years, the government has promoted agricultural products with high economic values in Zhubei, Qionglin and Guanxi. Through the integration of culture and tourism, the government hopes to create new opportunities for its agriculture industry.
