First “Story Corner House” in Taiwan opens to explore local Hakka storiesThe Provincial Highway No.3 (Hakka Romantic Avenue) Work Station, also called the “Story Corner House”, officially opened on May 6. A team from Hsinchu County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Community Development Center will be based in the Story Corner House to unearth local Hakka stories and discuss public affairs. Their objective is to build a high-quality living environment along Provincial Highway No.3 through local people’s participation.

The Story Corner House was jointly inaugurated by local elderly people, who had witnessed the ups and downs of Provincial Highway No.3. Miner Huang Ri-guang and Logger Lee Jin-long attended the opening ceremony and shared their life stories. As the setting of many Hakka stories, Provincial Highway No.3 is full of romance and sorrow. The establishment of the Story Corner House will reveal and document the humanistic charm, associated people, and touching stories of the highway.

Hsinchu County Magistrate Chiu Ching-chun said that the work station, located by Hengshan Railway Station, will be opened Wednesday to Sunday every week. Serving as a platform for resource integration and idea exchange, it will put community development into practice and bring together local people, township offices, cultural industry associations, cultural historians, artists, and schools.

Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau Zhang Yi-zhen said that the work station was established with a subsidy based on the Hakka Affairs Council’s “Provincial Highway No.3 Renaissance Plan.” The plan will be first carried out in 2017 in Guanxi, Hengshan, and Zhudong townships. Themed exhibitions, story-telling competitions, citizen deliberation conferences, and community highlight set-up are expected to be launched. The bureau also plans to offer empowerment courses taught by experts in various fields and organizes “Slow Life Festival.” These activities would allow more people to get close to and learn more about Provincial Highway No.3.
