Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je Visits Hsinchu County’s Second Sports Ground as Taipei and Hsinchu County Get Ready to Welcome the 2017 UniversiadeTaipei Mayor Ko Wen-je visited Hsinchu County’s 2017 Taipei Universiade venues on April 29 and gained an understanding of the progress of planning and implementation of each venue. Mayor Ko thanked Hsinchu County Magistrate Chiu Ching-chun for providing excellent venues and jointly hosting this grand international event, expressing the belief that, through team work and effective planning, a high quality sporting event can be presented; and, at the same time, Taipei City and Hsinchu County can be marketed to the world, increasing their competitiveness and making them the pride of Taiwan.    
 

Magistrate Chiu thanked Taipei City Government for giving Hsinchu County an opportunity to jointly host this major international sporting event. On the basis of “National LOHAS, Healthy City,” he stressed that preparations are well underway and full cooperation will be provided to achieve the objectives. In recent years, Hsinchu County has actively increased sports facilities and has poured a substantial amount of resources into sports, achieving good results in competitions, and through holding large scale sports events, has increased the number of people engaging in sport and encouraged citizens to take part in sporting activities, adding further sheen to the county’s LOHAS and healthy community image .

Taipei 2017 Universiade will be held from August 19 to August 30 in 2017. Hsinchu County will provide the county Swimming Hall (water polo), Second Sports ground (football) and Gymnasium (judo, martial arts.) To reach international standard, Taipei City Government and the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education, have subsidized NT$380 millions to renovate the venue. During his visit, Mayor Ko inspected the progress of venue renovation as well as taking part in a football practice session held by the county junior league, showing some of the benefits of holding international sports events. Mayor Ko and Magistrate Chiu joined Taipei City and Hsinchu County teams respectively as they engaged in a penalty kick-off, the children happily playing with the two leaders and taking photographs to commemorate the occasion. It is hoped that the 2017 Universiade will encourage more people to exercise, not just in Taipei and Hsinchu, but nationwide.

Liu Ming-chao, Director of the Department of Sports, Hsinchu County Government said that, in preparation for the 2017 Universiade, the contract will be public tendered and construction work will begin on Hsinchu County’s second sports ground in May. It is expected that acceptance inspection will be carried out in January, 2017. Improvement of the air conditioning systems, repair of floors and peripheral mercury light and overall renovation of the swimming hall and gymnasium is going according to schedule. It is hoped that by step by step renovation, not only will the most substantial support be given to the Universiade; but also, excellent venues will be the envy of participants from all over the world will be provided.
