Hsinchu County's 120 elementary and junior high schools install life-saving AED

The widespread distribution of automated external defibrillator (AED) in public places has increased the survival rate of patients going into cardiac arrest in public places before they can arrive at a hospital. In the past, AEDs were not installed in most elementary and junior high schools. Last year, the Hsinchu County government began distributing one set of AED in every school, and also provided an AED training instrument and CPR Anne with each device. Today (11th), the county government held a press conference where County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke announced the complete and successful installation of AED in the 120 elementary and junior high schools in Hsinchu County. The installations provide a safe place for school teachers, students and the public by delivering an extra protection for life.

During the press conference, County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke led a group of Level 1 supervisors, council members and school principals to paste AED labels on the map of the 13 townships. The labels highlighted the map of Hsinchu County, symbolizing the completion of the AED installation in the elementary and junior high schools of the 13 townships and emphasizing the importance of each and every corner. First aid specialists were also at hand to provide instructions on operating the equipment. In the future, the Hsinchu County Department of Education will collaborate with the Public Health Bureau and the Fire Bureau to strengthen the implementation of "CPR+AED First Aid Training" on campuses. It is hoped that by equipping teachers with first aid knowledge, they will have the courage, confidence and ability to save people.

County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke said that the AED is called a "Life Saver." Used in conjunction with CPR during the golden window of time for first aid when a patient collapses, it can reduce the death rate from sudden cardiac arrest before the patient can arrive at a hospital. In accordance with the Installation of Automated External Defibrillator in Public Places Regulations issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, senior high schools and institutions of higher education are among the eight public places where AEDs are required to be set up. Senior high schools and institutions of higher education in Hsinchu County have already installed AEDs in accordance with the regulations. However, elementary and junior high schools also have the necessary and urgent need for AEDs. Therefore, the county government raised NT$4.95 million last year to purchase AED equipment so that AED can be also be available in the county's elementary and junior high schools to protect the people and future pillars of the country.
