| Zhang Xue-Liang's Former Residence |
"Remembrance of a QingQuan Past - The Young Marshal's House Restored" As you drive toward QingQuan, the deep red and bright yellow leaves of autumn have all fallen and the mists of early winter swirl through the mountains and the lush forests, lending an otherworldly atmosphere to the verdant scenery. You continue upward along the winding road, not noticing the little settlements nestled in the mountains, past rock faces filled with cavities and protrusions, and then the dark, damp TaoShan Tunnel, and before long you arrive at the QingQuan settlement. QingQuan is located in TaoShan Village, WuFong Township, with mountains all around and the ShangPing River flowing through. First-time visitors find it hard not to be attracted by the secluded tranquility here, in this abode of Atayal tribes people. The Japanese discovered the hot springs here and named the place Inoue Hot Springs; after the Nationalist government came to Taiwan, its remoteness prompted Chiang Kai-shek to choose QingQuan as the place to keep Zhang Xue-Liang (Zhang Xue-Liang, the Young Marshal) under house arrest. Zhang lived here, like a recluse, for more than a decade. The late writer San Mao took a fancy to the carefree mountain atmosphere, and she too rented an old brick house here in which to construct her QingQuan story. |
